단어 공부 : ability, capacity, impotence,comptence

제가 영어 공부를 할때 제일 중요하게 여기는 것 중 하나는 단어 입니다.

중학교 때는 그렇다고 쳐도 고등학생 정도가 된다면, 영어를 영영사전을 보는 것을 권합니다.

단어장사서, 영단어를 한글로 기억하는 방법은 저는 하나도 맞지 않았습니다. 10개를 외우면 2개 정도는 기억 나지만, 8개를 잊어버립니다. 이런 식으로 공부를 한들 하루에 50개를 외운다고 해도, 40개를 잊어버린다면, 많이 외우고, 많이 공부할 수록 손해인 방법입니다. 그래서 저는 영영사전을 찾는 방법을 택했습니다. 영어를 영어로 찾는 것은 고통스러운 과정이긴 합니다.

영어 한 단어를 찾는데, 또 다른 모르는 단어를 만나게 됩니다. 1개를 찾는데 모르는 단어가 2개가 나온다고 한다면 단어만 공부하다가 영문법이나 독해를 하지도 못한 경우도 많이 있습니다. 하지만, 이것이 축적이 되어 단어를 많이 알게되면, 어느 순간 부터는 단어가 보이기 시작합니다. 모르는 단어가 나와도 이게 이런 뜻이 아닐까 하는 것이 머리속에 떠오릅니다.

 

거기다가 thesaurus라는 것을 이용하는 것도 좋은 방법입니다. 한마디로 유의어를 찾는 것입니다. 거기다 반의어를 알고 가면 어휘력은 확장되지 않을 래야 확장되지 않을 수 없습니다. 그리고 단어를 그저 단어 찾는 것으로 끝나지 않고, 그 단어가 들어간 문장을 찾아보았습니다. 물론 완벽한 것은 아닙니다. 제일 좋은 것은 사전을 찾는 것입니다. 하지만, 사전을 찾는 것이 귀찮다면 이런 식으로라도 공부하는 것은 어떨까요? 선택은 당신의 것입니다.

 

일부러 한글은 넣지 않았습니다. 어찌되었던 영어를 영어로 이해해보려고 노력하세요. 

정 못견디겠다면 한글로 해석해 보는 것도 좋지만, 영어를 영어로 이해해보려고 노력한다면, 1년만 노력하면 영어를 영어로 이해하는 힘이 늘어나게 될 것입니다. 하기만, 하면 되지 않을 까요?
